Best Settings for viewing Photos on Web

I've seen some really, really sharp clear shots on here. Besides the obvious of starting out with a picture in focus, good lense, good camera, etc., what software settings do most of you use to obtain these results?

I use Photoshop. Using a Rebel Xti, my shots come in at 3888x2592 (54"w x 36"h). After adjusting levels and cropping if needed, I usually set the image size to about 10.5"w x 7"h. The dpi is set at 72. I hardly ever get the clear shots like I see on here. I've experimented with all levels of the Sharp filter, but rarely do I get the result I want.

I guess what I'm asking is, what's the best settings to produce a resonable size "clear and sharp" file for the web using Photoshop? I use Photobucket to hold my shots.

Any help appreciated.

your ICC profile should be set to sRGB for web view and apply sharpening after you lower the resolution (last thing you do). Also realize that if you are cropping to 100% that your photos isn't going to be so sharp because there is a bayer interpolation.
