Best Remake Ever

Blaine

Mr. Hollywood
While I am generally disgusted with the idea of remakes, nearly as much as sequels (since it doesn't take a lot of original thinking to just do what's been done before) there are some remakes that have actually been better than the original. I'm perhaps one of the few people here who is not a fan of Kevin Costner, but he was in one of those remakes that was better than the original.

No Way Out - Remake
The Big Clock - Original

Steve Martin has basically made a career outta making remakes. A few weren't bad reincarnations at all:
-Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (remake of Bedtime Story)
and
-Little Shop of Horrors was better than the original
but
Most have paled in comparison:
-The Out-of-Towners
-Cheaper By The Dozen
-The Pink Panther

A few remakes that were better than their parent film:
-The Thing over The Thing from Another World (even though James Arness' Thing was scary as hell)
-The Fly
-The Man Who Knew Too Much (Hitch outdid himself with the Jimmy Stewart version)
-The Birdcage over La Cage aux folles
-Always over A Guy Named Joe
-The Magnificent Seven over The Seven Samurai (debatable)

However, most fall short of the picture that sired them:
-The Flight of the Phoenix
-Scarface
-Sabrina
-The End of the Affair
-Henry V
-The Ladykillers
-House On Haunted Hill
-The Manchurian Candidate
-Meet Joe Black over Death Takes A Holiday
...and so on and so forth

And some had no business EVER being remade:
-Mr. Deeds (Capra's classic Mr. Deeds Goes to Town is sacred stuff)
-Miracle on 34th Street
-Mighty Joe Young
-The Time Machine
-and of course Psycho :eek:WTF?!

The Departed was a remake of Internal Affairs. Both were great but I prefer The Departed.

The Thing was much better than the original. No comparison.

The original King Kong was good, but the Peter Jackson King Kong was beautiful to watch.

hmm well the thing is a great remake but chali magnificent seven over seven samurai. no way i wont take that.... if anything maybe yojimbo = fist full of dollars series both are enjoyable but sergio makes those movies so enjoyable its hard not to watch. I couldn't really sit through Mag 7 I was bored to years plus choice of shots and character development just didnt have the kurosawa touch.... plus it missed toshiro mifune and man his performance alone made you realize the realism and how japanese cinema was changed for ever after the war. remeber the two biggest movies that came out in japan that year was seven samurai and godzilla (1954)

lets see best recent remake.... The ring is done well by gorb I like the departed but but i still perfer infernal affiars due to its fast pace and glossy Hk flick plus all three films are very entertaining.

Along with The Thing, other "horror" films like The Fly and Dawn of the Dead have made some great remakes.

I would add "Scarface" to the list.

I dunno...

The Hughes/Muni original is a genre-defining moment in cinematic history. Classic stuff, that.

spidey,

again...it is debatable...but, damn
The Magnificent Seven stands as the ultimate ensemble of cool cats/bad-assed cast in every to ride off into the Western celluloid sunset. Helluva flick.

I'll meet you in the middle, tho, and say it's too close to call.

The Lord of the Rings. The improvement from the cartoon to the Peter Jackson version has to qualify as the best remake ever...
