Best Rain Cover

I want to purchase a rain cover for my dvx through B&H. They have two that are listed for the DVX a Petrol and a Panasonic. However, I'm a big fan of Kata's equipment, but am not sure about which one to buy for our camera.

So, who owns one (rain cover)? and which one do you prefer?
Can anyone tell me which cover is best to use from KATA?

Any insight on any of the covers would be great.

Thanks
Pure

Re: Best Rain Cover

I got a Kata it works very well. You can even keep your LCD monitor open with the cover on. I used it out in the rain last month and it handled great. Having the monitor flip out created a challenge because I was moving around quite a bit and you had to look through the little see thru plastic part of the cover to see the screen. It would be perfect if I was just standing still.

Re: Best Rain Cover

I like the Porta Brace better than the Kata.

Re: Best Rain Cover

I have a Kata rain cover and it works very well. Will support an external mic on the mount, lcd opened, the viewfinder angled through its entire range, etc..

Haven't used any others so I can't compare.

Re: Best Rain Cover

Do both the porta brace and kata not have a cover for the actual lens?

Do most rain covers not have a cover for that?

My Kata didn't come with a lens cover. But the front sleave fits the standard lens shade and extends a bit farther out so the lens doesn't get wet. If the rain is coming down hard or being blown around then there's a chance of getting rain in. I don't think this cover was made for more than a light sprinkle or spray.

Re: Best Rain Cover

Any raincovers out there that fit the camera and a matte box?? I'm looking for one that will work with my follow focus and matte box system.

DIY rain cover idea:

How about using a clear poncho with hood? You can find them for under $10 (USD). They are large enough to cover the DVX loaded down with gear (matte box, etc).

The lens points out the neck opening with the hood covering it. The arm openings would be used for, well your arms, but to reach into the poncho and work with the camera.

Re: Best Rain Cover

What would be a good rain cover to make sure NO rain gets in. I wouldn't mind the kata or porta brace but without a lens cover it doesn't seem that thorough.

Unless I'm missing something...

Re: Best Rain Cover

I have the Porta Brace and it covers the Lens Hood quite well and if you have
a UV Filter in front of the lens it should be pretty waterproof.

I think that in a real downpour or thunderstorm the rain cover for the camera
isn't the limiting factor. Think about other issues (audio, actors, lighting...) you
can protect these much less effectively than your camera.

Re: Best Rain Cover

You can use the KATA with a Mattebox. I used mine last month on a shoot in the rain. You have to put the rain cover on the camera first then attach the mattebox. You should still have enough free space to work your follow focus unit as well.

If you are using a mattebox, I have found that you are going to have a lot better chance of NOT getting water inside. Where as the lens hood that comes with the camera has those openings in it and the water can easily get in there then onto the camera. With a Mattebox and filter in the chamber, that prevents water from getting in besides on the KATA cover you just pull the various drawstrings to "cinch" it up.
