best quality for exhibit

I am sorry all, I can't seem to figure this one out. David, you helped me a week or two ago with a similar post, so thank you. I'm still having some issues. I'll try to make it thorough but quick:

I don't know why, but Vegas 6 won't let me print to tape from my 24p sequence in the timeline (maybe it just can't do this). One of the last dialog boxes (manual start, crash record, etc.) is greyed out. I have to render the entire file first, then open a new project, then print that to tape. Ok, so I render my sequence (made up of 24pA footage shot with my DVX100b) as 23.976 (inserting 2-3 pulldown) NTSC DV Widescreen .avi with best render settings. That takes an hour and a half or so. I then open a new 29.97 widescreen project, import my rendered file,
and try to print it to tape. I see there is a couple settings I can choose in the template dialog box. NTSC Widescreen, or 24p Widescreen (insertting 2-3 pulldown). Well, on either one, when I get back to the dialog box that asks me to choose whether I want to do a manual record or crash record, it's all greyed out again and I can't hit the finish button. What is going on? I tried to bypass this the other day by going to log and capture to print to tape from there. I imported my file into the print to tape browser, and it worked ok. But when we watched it on a big screen to prepare for it to show at an independent theatre here, it looked trashy, grainy, and had video and audio dropouts. The weird thing is, the file is huge - 2.5 gigs, so i don't understand why it would look so bad.

Does anyone have any advice here? I don't know what's going on. Is there a better/easier workaround for getting the best quality footage printed onto a miniDV tape for exhibit? This could very easily be user error because I have previously only worked with FCP, and I am certainly no expert on this stuff... but it's driving me crazy in Vegas. Thanks for any help or advice.

Or what about this... I forgot I have FInal Cut Express HD on my imac in the other room. The problem is, FCP doesn't like .avi files. I have tried rendering a .mov file with the NTSC codec, but it takes half the time and looks like it would end up more pixelated. Is this not true? Will both .avi and .mov files if set at best rendering setting look the same if rendering using the DV codec?

If I can get a "best quality" .mov file for NTSC DV, i could put that on my external and move that over to my iMac and print to tape from there. Anyone?
