Best possible way to upres

So i shoot most my stuff with a DVX100a, live concert stuff... sometimes with a sony pdx10.

anyways currently i shoot everything 4:3 30P and am curious about how to upres with just FCP and compressor. i know that if i shoot squeeze id be gaining 16x9 but loosing a bit of resolution and i should keep as much of that as possible so an anamorphic adapter would be the solution. Lets say for now thats not an option. Should i capture SD edit then export using compressor to the final res and size? or capture SD into an upscaled timeline? Or capture SD 4:3 DV/DVC and then upres with compressor to 720P DVCPRO HD then edit and do some color and smoothing then final HD export?

Don't know if it would work since you source material is 720x480. Even at HDV it is 1440 x 1080. So the pixel count alone won't SD into HD without some sort of work around. Years ago I use to use photozoom pro method via Stephen Dempsey (Pine Lake Films) to simulate HD..but it was time consuming the output is pretty good 3 years ago before HDV came out. Here is the link.

From there you could probably convert it to a quicktime H264 file, then edit from there. Hope it helps.

Shoot squeeze- the tradeoff in optical artifacting vs. slight difference in resolution is minimal. Not too mention the 16:9 adapter is a heavy PITA to work with and expensive. That said, if you need HD shoot HD. A Canon 60D for example costs about the same as an anamorphic adapter and gives you full HD out of the box that will beat any possible upconversion ever.

just doing some test with compressor and i took a short clip and did a scale up to a few different HD sizes n codecs with really good results, the original clips had some issues so it wasnt the best to try and use but im going to shoot some test clips in various settings to see what i can do to get the best results? Any scene setting tips out there if you know your going to upres later?

But again- whyy? Upconversion looks like crap when viewed on a true HD monitor. And even an iPhone shoots better HD than you'll get upconverting DV.

Noah is right. It's the 21st century. There will only be more demand for HD, not less. There will only be less demand for SD, not more. It makes less & less sense to continue shooting SD, especially if you already know that you'll need to deliver in HD.

Ok so not that i need to deliver HD i really just want to get some sharp HD (sized) stuff outta my dvx100a, ive seen a few things on here of upresing for the web that look as good as stuff shot in HD???? And there is the example of always sunny upscaling they're show to HD for broadcast on TV mind you so its possible im just trying to tool around here not make blue rays for customers or broadcast on TV...

I have got good results capturing SD then exporting quicktime movie then turning that into a 720P DVCpro HD file with good results my question is, is DVCPRO HD good for the web hows the compression? I got similar results with HDV 720p conversions.

whats the best workflow for upscaled project? Capture SD > SD project > edit SD color correct ect... > export into DVCPRO HD 720P or HDV 720P

Capture SD > Upscale > edit HD > final HD export ??? Whats a good codec to use to upscale into HD for web?

thanks

Put your finished project through a terranex box. I owned a DVX100 and did that - was very pleased. Did a conversion from PAL to NTSC at the same time. Was also pleased with that. It's expensive, so don't do it until your project is complete. It should be your last step.
