Best partition size, etc for FCP set up

Tell me to go away if I'm a bother, but I'm new to this Mac and FCP stuff.

I have my G5 system with a 400GB system drive and a 500GB second drive installed.

How would you best partition these drives for what will primarily be FCP use?

What type of partition should I use (Max OS journaled, Mac OS, etc.)?

Thanks. I want to do this right the first time.

Well, what type of material will you primarily be editing? E.g., will you need to have 2 or three features on-line at the same time, or 1 3-minute music video, or 5-6 weddings? Basically, what's the average and largest size of your projected projects?

For capture, use non-journaled partitions; they have better performance. For everything else, you can use either. I usually journal only the system partition...

A mix of both. Right now I have about 3hrs that needs to be distilled down to
about 2-1/2 hours. But other projects will be much smaller. The big project will be quick and dirty then can be archived.

I'm hoping to have only one big project on the system at a time; I am committed to doing a better job of getting finished projects off of the system.

Well, assuming there'll me some more big projects, and keeping things reasonably felxible, I'd go with 8 partitions -

A 200 GB system partition, and 7 100GB partitions with the rest of it. You'll have a lot of choice for ping-ponging, and will be able to keep a few projects on-line at once... I agree with your commitment to more discipline... but in my case, at least, well, no-one's perfect.

You'll want to capture to the 500GB drive, and try to arrange drive-intensive processes to use both drives.

Thanks.
I'll need to go with a little less as the logical space avail is less than the
physicial space on the drives.
