Best option for multi 1280 x 1024 feed recording as "B-Roll" in a Red Camera Shoot
Hello all.
Have a client shoot coming up. We are using a RED One for a shoot showcasing a first person shooter style simulator system, with multiple sim stations in play. The client wants ability to match footage from 14 separate feeds and a virtual camera, to be able to mix with the shots we are taking of the sim operators with the Red Cam. This is similar in other words, to the movie "Gamer" where the POV switches back and forth showing the "game" operator to his POV.
As a director, my obvious recommendation was to merely shot list it out, and get coverage etc to match. But the client is adamant about running a live scenario, and having the ability of going through footage later, and picking and choosing from the live events to match it all up. Suggests a fairly lengthy addition to post production, so I suggested a multi switch type scenario. No. Again, client wants to preserve options in post (and as a director I agree about the limitations of switching live and dumping the "extra" info).
So I am trying to find some kind of rental or purchase that doesn't kill my budget for recording uncompressed 1280 x 1024 - or if compressed like h.264 or similar, is that going to match up quality wise with our RED footage? Obviously the virtual enviroment stuff can look "virtual" so compression may not be an issue. Just trying to give the client most bang for buck visually. He is suggesting renting 15 recorder decks (receiving HDMI input). I'm seeing that as a very expensive option?
I am thinking one or more DVRs for CCTV security purposes like some of the 16 channel varieties... but is this going to preserve info from all 16 channels? Or do these type decks merely suppport 16 channel output? How much is image going to suffer?
Anyone know what I am talking about here? Starting to have nightmares of building 16 servers into a rack with 16 HD capture cards, 16 hard drives etc... yikes. Another way to do this? I know there is some pretty sophisticated HD recorder tech and RAID arrays etc out there - just want to rent or build most cost effective scenario. Any all advice greatly appreciated.
