Hello - I'm just wondering what the best light will be for a reception - I won't have too much control over the lighting so I wanted a light to be attached to the camera to walk around with - anyone have any suggestions? will I need a battery pack for it or can it be powered by the camera battery?

thx all>!

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

argh I wasn't logged in - the title should also include "other dark events where power isn't available"

thx!

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

B&H has a great selection of on camera lights. Look for any light that you can contrrol with a dimmer. Barn doors are nice, and something that you can add diffusion to is even better. Brand really doesn't matter, and you don't have to spend a fortune either. Some folks spend $500.00 + for a light, I spent about $100.00 for a light for interviews and low light run and gun shooting. Check out the mid level BESCOR lights.

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

I've been very happy with the Lowell Id light on-camera. Features a variable focus/spread, and a built-in noiseless dimmer. I got the accessory ring and have barn doors and two filters on the thing and it's a great light.

Highly recommended!

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

I've seen a few of thoughs Lowell's go dead after being bumped a little too hard. Check out NRG's Varalux light.

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

I picked up a 50watt bescor on camera light with a monster belt battery, I think it was like $275 or something for the kit from B&H, for a wedding or something it's super overkill on the battery, I just didn't want to not have the juice if I needed it. On the other had it's a portable 12v system for anything that runs 12v dc. but the bescor's are nice,

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

Im torn between PAG C6.. Durability being its palstic is a question.
The other Frezzi. i really like it. Should i buy a NRG belt with it? Day Pro maybe?? The Frezzi battery in the kit they sell is only good for 45 minutes.. I think I need maybe twice that. looking at a 35 watt Mini Frezzi . Do I need a dimmer on it?? Someone please help need to make purchase in a few days

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

You can use a 30 watt lamp in Pag C6 and the batteri is good for 100 minutes. The Paglight C6 is constructed from a glass-reinforced engineering polymer that provides impact resistance and temperature stability.
The combination of this modern material and the patented heat dissipation system ensures the Paglight C6 is cool-running and comfortable to handle.

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

lol, PHD sounds like your selling them. How long have you owned yours? Do you feel that its a durable product? is 35 watt enoughor do i need a 50 or 75?? i wish i had these inhand to test.. Any real world experience?

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

Do a test Fred_Plowman and tell us ;D

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

ok guys.. recieved the Frezzi in the mail.. construction is second to none.. 35 watt dimmable.. waiting for NRG power pro belt so i havent used it yet. it is heavy duty.. Not plastic like PAG light.. I havent seen or used the PAG light so it might be great..

I do feel I mae the right decision though.. Its build quality is top notch

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

I've got a Frezzi Mini-Fill Dimmer, and second that -- it's superb. The micro-fill might be a good choice for the DVX, because the 75w of the mini-fill is fairly overpowering for most situations, and when I dim it down to a usable level, it starts to go red... plus the Micro-fill is probably half the price!

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

if you get filter that has the dichroic filter, you can eliminate the yellowing/ color changing that happens when you dim the light. The micro-fill combo accessory has both the diffuser and the dichroic. not cheap though!

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

Fred,

Curious, how has the light been working for you. We are looking at some on camera lights, this is one of the ones we are considering.

Those that are using them I have several questions:

1) Where did you order it from?
2) What was everything you ordered for it?
3) How much $ did you put into it?

;D

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

quick sidebar-

anyone have a good recommendation for an on-board HMI?

or should I just get a 75w tungsten and blue it down to 25w?

Re: Best on camera light for a wedding?

okay, I just checked out the frezzi sun guns, never mind.

talk about not cheap.

but it seems like 5600 light is better for the output and battery life, so it looks worth the expense...
