What in your oppinon is a good on camera mic I should get for my DVX or any cam with a Shoe mount. I need at least 15watts. 20-30 would be great. I use it for wedding videography. I bought a Sunpack 20 watt light but it only lasts 17 minutes and needs a 5 hour charge. Silly.
It looks good but dosnt last and I even have two of them. Need more power!
I want to spend around 100$ but would be interested in what is the idea light.

Thanks. :D

Re: Best on cam LIGHT for DVX

hi jimmy dean sausage-

there is a lot in the archive about "on-camera lighting" on-board, camera light, etc. there is lighting forum--great place to start!

a few now, for thought:

with $100, there might be something in the Bescor brand line up that will work

sony hvl-dw20

more $$

pagelight
mini frezzi

usually, the battery system rivals or is greater than the cost of the light.

it is a huge benefit to get a light that you can diffuse or dim --or one that comes with these options natively. with a blaring light, all your video will have people squinting or looking annoyed. or they will duck when they see you. but this kind of light does bring up the $$$

Re: Best on cam LIGHT for DVX

Has anyone seen/tried the Litepanels advertised on page 64 of the Nov. DV Mag? Looks nice, of course...it's an ad!

Re: Best on cam LIGHT for DVX

I tried the light panels at NAB.. remember those guys stole my LED panel idea from way back when.. but anyways they are pretty solid and consistent, as small of a soft source as your gonna get.

Re: Best on cam LIGHT for DVX

What about lights that use XLR or cigerette lighter inputs;

So I see You have to buy a battery belt with XLR power output. about 159.

So what else could you power with the battery belt that has XLR and cigertte lighter. Just the light?
Is there any way to power the camera as well by XLR. Clearly, I dont know much about XLR power supplys. but want to know all I can.

Thanks,

Re: Best on cam LIGHT for DVX

Jimmy,

you should order either the EVS or the B&H catalog. They both have a page with just onboard lights for you to decide on. You can always buy a battery belt and power your light that way instead of it lasting 17 minutes. Also do you keep your light on all the time? I only use mine when I am recording. When I stop recording I turn the light off.

Re: Best on cam LIGHT for DVX

i bought a sony from b and h for 100 bucks and it works great. it has its own bats also.

Re: Best on cam LIGHT for DVX

i did a TON of research and i read just about every single message i could in the lighting thread (you know there IS a lighting section JUSt for lighting messages)

anyway, i went with the mini frezzi, 100 watt DIMMABLE with the soft matte box with color correction filters, and for power i went with the nrg batt belt, the 95watt/hour model.

i definitely wanted the dimmable model so i can use 25 watts or whatever for interviews, but still have the extra power for wider scenes.
