Best NR software and-or plugin

The best? Well I think that would have to be Cedar. But it's $30,000. Rx is great in the affordable range. The cheapest for just tape hiss is a Behringer Box that you can probably pick up used for a few bucks. Works great but only on hiss.

AS you may have noticed there are a range of opinions. And the thing is they are all correct. SS2 is very fast and can do wonders on light broadband noise. It also is decent with hums and the declicker is not bad. And the non pro version is very affordable. Wave arts? They make pretty good plugins so I would expect decent results. ProTools has something called BNR that is much maligned but works well with in it's limits. And is a cool special FX when you push it past those limits. Waves also has a restoration bundle that many like.

The three I have used, on the Mac, are SS2, BNR and Rx. With Rx I can often get much more reduction before I get artifacts. And the killer for me is spectral repair. Their demo is removing a phone ring from on top of dialog. I've removed the sound of a guy tapping his foot under the table while being interviewed and just helped a friend with a wedding video where they had a faulty cable that kept glitching out on them and some misc other clicks and pops. So for serious salvage I go to Rx. For light quick stuff I will often try SS2 first.
