Best NLE system on PC?

Hi guys,

I need help.

I gotta buy a new editing station for my production company. I work with a DVC80 and a DVX100.

What's the best NLE system in your opinion to work with the DVX100 on a quality PC?
Should I Use Premiere 2.0? Avid Xpress?
Which board you think is the best in the 1,000-2,000 price range?

Malmsteen, I've seen that thread, thanks. Although it doesnt address my specific problem, so I'll repost this here. Thanks everyone for your attention.

For someone going Avid, which system specs would you recommend? I'll be working on two weekly tv shows and lots of short films shot on 24p with the DVX100ap.
Also, is there a real-time capture board that you guys recommend? I used to own a very powerful PC with a Matrox Rtx10 board, but Matrox boards fail all the freaking time. I need something more reliable that won't crash as much.

If you're going with Avid go to thier site and check the system specs there. If you aren't running an Avid approved system you'll be hard pressed to get any support from them at all. I use Avid Xpress Pro, Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas. All have thier strengths and weaknesses. For myself I break them down as follows. Long form, straight forward cuts and dissolves; XPro. Short form, a lot of effects work; Premiere. Heavy audio work; Vegas.
 
I guess I'll go with Premiere then. Now, what I need to decide is which one is the good board.

I wanna stay clear of Matrox systems, because they crash and burn all the freaking time. I need something more reliable.
I've been reading that apparently Avid and Pinnacle Systems are working together - their newest suite is called "Avid Liquid Pro". Anyone knows if that's Premiere compatible, like Liquid 6 was?

I'll have to chime in with Vegas too. If you're shooting with a DVX100A (which I do) I would definitely use Vegas. Best 24P support out there, by far! Like Edweirdo, I used to be a Premiere user too. But then I got the DVX and everything changed. Premiere is too buggy with 24P (and with everything in general). I haven't had much time to evaluate the newest release of Premiere Pro, but hopefully they've fixed some of the issues. By posting in the Premiere forum it seems like you may have already made up your mind though. How open are you to learning a new system? I think it's best to evaluate what works for your needs and go for that. All of these have trial programs too, so I'd give each one a spin.
 
Best NLE = The one you already know.

If you don't know any - download the trial versions and give them all a spin, then decide for yourself which one you are most comfortable with.
I use Premiere Pro 1.51 with the Matrox 100 card and rarely have any problems. no more than when I'm just surfing the web on my laptop.
the key to gear like the Matrox card is making sure the system is built EXACTLY to the companies specs and it will then likely be a non issue. I've heard, no proof myself, that AVID is very picky about video and sound cards. Just build it to their specs.
As for 24P support in PPro - anyone that uses PPro and shoots 24P should have discovered the tricks by now to ease their problems. It's really simple - Shoot 24PA and ALWAYS capture using scene detect.
Two very easy steps to eliminate the flicker problem.
 
Having worked on Avid, Premiere, FCP,IMC Incite, Speedrazor and Vegas I have to say my choice in any given situation would be Vegas. Rock solid (on a solid machine....that is one lacking any Matrox boards) and extremely sensible.
 
If other artists contribute to your work, motion grahics, photoshop and Illustrator elements, and you want a decent level of integration with audio and DVD authering then PPro is probably your best bet. I wouldn't recomend PPro2.0 yet though, there are still a lot of issues that need to be worked out.

Regarding video cards, I'm using the Quadro FX540 becuase I'm now mostly editing HD with AspectHD. I've had some issues with it but it does work well. The little SD work I've done lately has been a breeze.

Well seems like Vegas is a winner among 24p people ;)

I'm well used to Premiere, and I've done lots of shows on Final Cut Pro. MIght as well try Vegas.
I got myself a cheap firewire card for the sake of testing and doing some small time editing for small resolution shorts.
Is Vegas compatible with that? I mean, can I just use a firewire card? If so, where can I find the trial version of the software?

For the record, my previous editing station has been built in compliance with Matrox specs and support services. Just bugsbugsbugsbugsbugsbugsbugsbugs - even tho I love that board when it's not bugging around (which is rara :p)
 
meh..i'm shooting 24p and i pick pro 1.5 and 2.0 when i'm done this major project. I tried vegas and it didnt go to well.

Pro is lot like FCP, since Adobe modeled it after FCP.

I tried them all
avid, vegas, pinacle etc
pro was the best for the type of stuff i do. I its a personal prefference of course. Use what you know, you can do all the same stuff in all of them its a matter of what youre comfortable with.

I was actually not so happy with matrox/pp1.5 capture on 24p. But then again, the matrox board wont support that.

I'm a fan of Ppro too, that's what I've been using for years. But if I can do a better job on some other system... well, I'm just looking for the best option.

Anyone knows if Vegas will capture from a simple firewire card?
