Best monitor for editing on MacBook pro

Hi all - I've switched from my 27" iMac to a MacBook pro, and am editing on it with premiere pro. I'd like to get an external monitor and wondering if anyone had any tips? I don't want to spend a fortune, but I'm happy spending a bit more if it's worth it. The truth is, a lot of the technical jargon is over my head (I didn't think monitors were that complicated!) so I'm after some people's experiences/thoughts if possible. Also, I'm not too fussed on 4k, and unless it makes a difference to performance, I don't mind it not having thunderbolt as I have to connect via an adapter when I occasionally work from a hot desk anyway, so I'm used to it and have the adapter here.

Some monitors that have popped up in some research are below - if anyone has any thoughts or experiences with these in particular I'd be grateful to hear it!

First, you need to remove all the 1920x1080 monitors, since that resolution is too low. Video editing applications tend to have a pretty busy GUI and you'll need a bit more pixels for that.

Currently, if you don't go for 5k, look for a 2560x1440 monitor. If you buy a 4k monitor you'll 'lose' GUI resolution once again, since most 4k monitors want to be driven in HiDPI mode which essentially turns them into 1920x1080 panels (for GUI). You could go for a larger monitor like 27" or greater and use 4k monitor at its native resolution, but your interface might turn out too small in the long term.

In your list only one monitor qualifies—the Dell 25" 2560x1440. Interestingly enough, that's the one I'm using right now, in a dual monitor setup. I bought it as an interim solution while waiting to go dual 5k. I think that 25" Dell offers great price/performance.

In the price/performance segment Dell has a pretty solid reputation. No need to look further to shave a few $ off.

Thanks Andree - that's super helpful. If I do get that monitor, would it still be a good choice for general design/photography work too? I do these things on the side too, so although I'm getting it mainly for video, I'll just leave it as part of my setup so need to use photoshop, illustrator and do web stuff on it too.

Thanks Andree. I ordered the monitor and its great for video - only thing is that for anything else the text is quite small - so if I'm typing some code on it or designing in photoshop it's hard to sit back from. I tried increasing the resolution in the mac settings to but its pretty poor quality then. Is there a workaround for this, or is this just the kind of monitor it is?

Thanks
