Best MiniDV Tapes for DVX?

Hi guys,
Well this is my first post on dvxuser and I just ordered my dvx the other day, so i'm really excited. I can't wait for my dvx to come in but I had a question before it does. What miniDV tapes do you guys prefer, and does anyone give a superior result? Just something that I was thinking about, so many to choose from.

Thanks!

Got my DVX last week (from EVS, thanks Rush! - can't wait to get up to speed and start contributing!

Enquiring minds want to know why the Panasonic 63min MQ tapes are the best.

If my plan is to shoot on a tape, capture it, and store the tape and never use it again, couldn't I go with a cheaper tape? It's just data, right? Do the non-MQ tapes people use have any issues that would steer me to use only the MQ?

I am going to heed the advice and pick one brand/version and stick with it.

Thanks!
Greg

Hi greg, thank you for your purchase, sir. :) In answer to your question, it's not just an archival issue but more of getting the greatest density of magnetic particles in a given square inch (MQ as opposed to PQ), dry lube tape (essential for the DVX tape mech., as opposed to wet lube Sony tape), and clean manufacturing practice that doesn't leave debris clogging up the heads (as opposed to cheaper low-grade tapes).

I've been using SONY DVCAM tapes on our DVX at work for almost a couple years now.
Absolutely zero problems.

Reason: We've used DVCAM for years in our decks before the DVX, and didn't want to mix tapes.

If you don't mix tapes, you can use DVM60EX and DVCAM tape just fine, it will just run down the motor life in the DVX (from 3000 down to 1500 hrs.), because it is expecting tape with less drag. In the past, AYDVM63MQ has just been cheaper that's all, $2 cheaper than EX, and half off DVCAM 40's.

Makes sense. And I now see that you have answered this same question in other threads - I didn't have good enough search terms to find it... thanks for taking the time again.

Rush, I will drop you a email asking about MQ prices.
btw, in another thread I saw that EVS bought the last 5000 MQ tapes from panny, and when they are gone, that's it. How many do you have left?

Thanks,
Greg
