Best mic under 300US$

Still a bit over my head, I will have to get one of my co-workers to explain it to me next week.

Why would he (the guy that started this thread), ne a mixer instead of going straight to the camera? What are the pros and cons?

phantom is simply electricity sent to the mic in the XLR cable that powers the mic up. there - third grader level.

No one NEEDS a mixer if using two mics or less, but even using only one or two mics they give you a few great advantages:

1 - much better preamps. so they can help whatever mic you are using sound its best, instead of retarding its sound by amplifying it with poorer circuitry.

2 - much better metering and monitoring. they give you accurate levels that audio is hitting the mixer, and let you listen at clear, hiss free, sufficient volumes to hear problems.

3 - if you have a cam guy and a sound guy, they let the sound guy be fairly independant of the camera.

4 - if you wanna use more mics or sources, they let you mix them down to two to send to the camera
