Best mic setup for 200-300 dollars?

I've got a DVX100a and I'm trying to setup my own dolly system soon--I built my 14 dollar steadicam and I have over 2,000 watts of Home Depot halogen lights for lighting, and some smaller tin lamps that work pretty well. I am trying to get a boom setup for micing my movies so that I don't have to use the horrible built in mic, but I can't get a 1000+ or even 500+ dollar mic. Is there a shotgun mic/boompole I can do up for like 250-300 bucks?
Thanks

My own success story, I lucked out getting a Sennheiser ME-66 off of eBay about a year ago for $250. If you could have the same luck, I can't say enough good stuff about this mic.

But then again, anything Sennheiser is top of the line.

A lot of people have had good luck with the Oktava MC012+Hypercardoid capsule. Amazing indoors, needs shockmount+zeppelin outdoors. You can get it at www.sound-room.com or you might find a deal on ebay for under $200, which leaves some budget for accessories.

mm! Yes indeed mickeloaf! The Octava might very well be your best bet. Forgot about that. You could get a cardiod and hyper cardiod capsule for it and have just about everything you would need (save perhaps something for long shotgun type shots..)

Whenever this question is asked I always say AT897. But that's the only sub $500 mic I have any experience with.
