BEST Mic for the cost!!!

Hi all!
I need help. I am thinking of purchasing a shotgun mic. I used the AT4073 and I love it. Great audio. But now I am thinking of purchasing one. It is a difficult task, because I don't know which ONE is good.

Shooting condition:
1) Outside airport
2) Driving inside a car on freeway/highway
3) Bar
4) City Streets
5) In courtroom
6) Inside a bar

I was thinking of getting a lavalier for the car scene. So I am thinking of either getting a good shotgun for all the location or getting a cheaper shotgun and getting a set of good lavaliers.

Now, I only have a budget of $500-$600 dollars. What is a good mic pound for pound in relation to the price tag?

thanks

Or just scroll through the first 10-20 pages of the audio forum. You'll find your answer, and at the same time get even more confused ;D

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

Thanks Jim,
I read almost as much as my head can absorb. Now must of the old thread have been comparing at897 to k6/me66 or such. Pretty much between Sennheiser and audio technica.

Now, I am only interested in the AT. I read that me 64 and me66 is difference in the situation it will be used. me66 more for outdoors...bla bla bla.

what about the at897 vs AT815 vs AT835b vs AT 4073????

Thanks

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

I am not familiar with the 815, but in a broad sense I would go with the 4073, then the 897. (Which, not surprisingly, coincides with their pricing) I would stay away from the 835b. There are better mics in the price reange, especially for indoor shooting.

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

Thanks again Jim, but can u clarify which mike is best suited for which scenario. I know the 4073/4071 are more shotgun and good for outdoors.

What about 897?
What about 815?
What about 835?

Anyone? I know Jim you said you are unfamiliar with the 815, anyone else?

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

815 is what my dog do when i take him out , the 835 is the same , the 897 is another very evereg product which soccses is only by the price - all of them are "good" mainly for out door situation and get hit by acoustic problems ( ecco reflecting ) in indoor situations

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

If you liked AT4073, then you should buy it.

oleg,
if you don't like the performance of 815, 835, 897 for outdoors, can you recommend some good reasonably priced mics for indoors?

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

the octava with hc and cardioid heads - about 260 $ in sound room
+ some in line lo cut filter if you are going to run dyrectly to the camera and dont have any low cut filters , if you are running any normal mixer you probably have it , the octava need good suspention - like every other mike :-)

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

even the old sony c-74 i have has better sound then 897 ( and 66 imo) and it 15 years old and it sony :-)

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

Oleg,
Thanks alot. ;)

How would you rate AT4073 for indoors?
I want to hear your professional opinion if you have had chance to play with it. My experience with AT4073 has been just fantastic, but sometimes it can have a little too much low frequency, especially for indoors.

I have tested AT897 and I was really surprised at it. I actually liked the sound of it indoors (the room I tested was a small living room, very little reverb). It sounded like it had more noise than 4073 but still very warm and natural. I was actually thinking about getting one as a back up mic.

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

look if you would take all the reverb from the room even the 897 would sounds as it souns out doors - but in real life when you don have this every shotgun with supprr cardioid pattern would actualy hear not only whats in the front but whats in his behind , the low fq rumble from walls resonanse and silling is what hit your mike the most since the low fq are less regected buy the mike pattern ( thats why you hearer more reverb in low fq), so for normal work with lousy locations i prefer not to deal with shot gun mikes at all . the hc and cardioids would be less effected by comming back sounds from the walls .
now the qwestion what better - you already unswered , themike which have less noice and much plesser sound , maybe the 897 responce over all is to depressed in low fq so actually it better regect low fq but it also depress them wheen you dont wont it . i heard and played with this mike and only can recomend it as on camera one since that is only for pick up some noice which can be after use to put for the flor of the mute shot
even for this perpes it to long becouse the battery compartment .
the mikes which come with digi beta and privius beta sp and current hd -900 have build in low cut filter around 200Hz and grate sencitivity and very high noice -since noone think you are going to take adialog with that one , only something useble to put under naration .
yje 4073 is agrate mike , i can work with it , but even then ill not be happy in indoar situation ( i have better mikes and usially they also stay in the trank)

Re: BEST Mic for the cost!!!

GEt yourself ME 66 Seiheisser. I got one and do dialogs in and outdoors and it works beautifully.
