Best methods of storing data?

Till now I have tended to store all my video/photo files on my computer hard drive (2TB) and also backups on a number of external hard drives. But with increasing files can see the day soon where my PC hard drive will be filled up completely. Is it better practice to keep all files such as video etc on external drives and only the files you are working on, on the PC drive? And once edited etc move that off the PC. Or what ways are best?

I remember my first computer did not even have a hard drive and everything was stored on floppy disks!

What if you saved each project to an SD card, stored the cards in plastic sleeves, and the sleeves in a three-ring binder?

This is actually a hard problem. I'm a computer programmer, and on the computer programmer forum I visit, they ask the same thing, what's the best way to store all of my data? No one seems to have an easy answer that doesn't have some drawbacks.

You could also use USB external drives and store those on the shelf, but it worries me a little to store so much data on one vulnerable device. Sometimes the best solutions are a mix of the old world (like three-ring binders) and new world (digital media cards).

I would be interested in the others' opinions, because I'm on a long sabbatical. This is armchair opinion.

I don't keep any footage on my machines drive. All footage is on externals.

Here is my set up:

Drive #1 in office- Come back to office and download footage to this drive.
Drive #2 in office- back up #1 Drive to this drive.
Drive #3 offsite- this drive is offsite and is used to back up the data.

When these are full, #1 is re-formatted, #2 & 3 are placed in storage. A new volume is then started with the same scheme. Archiving the cards is too expensive and not an option- especially the P2 cards 😉.
