Best Methods for 24P in Premiere

I'm sure this has been explained here and there, but I can't ever seem to find one 'solid' answer to the best proceedure for capturing/working with 24p footage in Adobe Premiere.

What is the best way to have my 24p footage properly interpreted in Premiere? What capture settings, project settings, etc. do I need? Is there a step by step method to follow?

If someone could outline a definate way for all Premiere users to do this, then maybe it could be made into a sticky to keep others from asking this question over and over. At any rate, it's a process I'd like to get figured out, otherwise I'll have to switch editing systems... despite the fact I've been a loyal Premiere user since 5.5 But hey, what can ya do?

Are you shooting the footage 24p or 24pa?

If you're shooting 24pa, it's very simple: when you start a new project, select one of the presets from the "Panasonic 24p" folder (either standard or [anamorphic] widescreen, and either 32 or 48khz audio - depends on your footage). You're good to go.

Capturing makes no difference whatsoever. You can even capture your 24pa footage into a 29.97 fps project, and then import those files into a 24 project. As long as they were originally shot 24pa, they'll show up as 24pa in any 24pa project. All NTSC video is really 29.97 (that's the only thing a miniDV tape can handle) - 24pa is just a way of distributing the 24 full frames over 60 fields such that your editor can retrieve them.

I've never worked with the 24p mode (2:3 pulldown, as oppsed to the 2:3:3:2 or 24pa). Does it work the same way?

I must have missed something... there's a folder of Panasonic 24p presets in Premiere 1.5? So far as I've ever noticed, my only options were the basic NTSC and PAL presets... or is this something I'd have to install seperately?

Thanks!

Yeah, it should look something like this:

I had to stop using Premiere 1.5 because when the video was exported, it would always be choppy. I asked people on here about it and I wasn't the only one with the problem. I'll be curious to see how this one turns out. Let me know querilla.

if you shoot f5 / 24p normal, you will have a problem in premiere 1.5 not in 1.0, 6.0, etc. The matrox rtx.100 fixes this in 1.5 tho.

:lipsrseal Well, shut my mouth. I must be blind...

So then the reason that FCP and Avid bullies bash on Premiere isn't that it can't capture 24PA footage, but that it doesn't export it as well... makes sense.

What is the matrox rtx.100? Do I need it if I'm shooting in 24pa? I'm running Premiere 1.5, and it sounds like there's some issues I might want to address before exporting anything.

As has already been stated, if you're shooting 24pa, your fine, just use the "panasonic 24p" timeline and all will be well... Steer clear of shooting regular 24p with Premiere Pro 1.5 as there are some bugs.
