Best Matte Box for HVX

We hope our new Matteblox HD (to be shown at NAB) will be a great solution for many people. So far no one has any significant experience with it (except me), since we only have the one prototype. What are you looking for in a HVX matte box?

I don't really even know which model # it is; Rush hooked me up with the full kit. It uses rails, and I think the whole thing was in the $1500 ballpark.

Trust me, I sure wish I'd have known Dakota was coming out with his IndieSnap! But as-is, the Chrosziel is good product.

41150 mattebox (with FF) with 42002 center support, 40148A baseplate. :) Optionally, you can add 41010PM104 sidewings. Yes you can clamp on, but I guarantee it will cost a lot more than Dakota's... That is a heckuva mattebox for $249 !

I have this system for my DVX (link) but it does not fit the HVX. Does anyone have experience getting thie Chrosziel 411-50PK to fit?

Aside form the fact that I can't locate an 82mm - 85mm step ring, the rods sit too low. No matter how I adjust it the height is completely off for the HVX. I hate to have to totally reinvest in a matte box system... especially since this one has been so nice.

I bought the 41150 from Rush just before he left EVS. Definately the way to go.

Now if only Chroziel made a Mattebox for my A900 cell phone.

Thanks again for ther great work on the brochure in Dec (I'm the shooter who photographed you w/ your rig)

My HVX 200 came Tuesday - what a great camera.

3 quick Q's

1- The Chroziel 41150 - where should I get it?

2- The Redrock M2 - good?

3- The Panasonic 17" LCD - If I can spring for the $$$ is it great?

All the best,

Michael Schoenfeld

BTW - if you get your hands on the brochure, that's Evin in the "front" vehicle on the back cover!

Help a non-film guy out here. Why do you need a matte box? I've never quite understood the purpose of these.
Ah, the mattebox... It is the heart of filtration, which is important to eke out a cinematic look from any video camera. It is often the last purchase (after tripod amd mic and bag and lights), but the most important visually. It blocks unwanted light, holds pro filters, increases creative possibilities while reducing flare. They are a bit overpriced though, so, Dakota' s mattebox sounds spot on for filmmakers on a budget. :)

Hello Michael, I will answer for Evin until the poor guy is able to tear away from his word processor for a minute :) Nice pictures btw. Made the man famous!

He got the 41150 from me when I worked at EVS. Just don't forget the 42002 bracket and 40148A baseplate. Total about $1590.
RedrockM2, heard great things about it, seen it in action, but never personally used it, maybe Evin can comment later.
BTLH1700: worth every penny, as long as you understand one shortcoming. It appears a bit brighter than the footage really is, even if you calibrate it. Aside from that one thing, it's the best monitor I ever used, and the waveform aspect is beyond important: it's essential. However Evin has a 17" Sony LCD that also worked very well. It wasn't as sharp and didn't have the waveform, but it was only $500. He can tell you which model it was. But I personally say, if you can go for the Panasonic, get it. That monitor saved us many times. :love4:

What's the main difference between the 41150 Mattebox and the Sunshade? Only thing I see different is an extra filter stage, option for side wings and the swing away arm. Is it worth the extra $$$?

It's worth it for people who need those options, as well as 15mm rod mounting. It's also usually wider for lens adapters. 41150 is considered a 'luxury' sunshade anyhow.

Thank you for doing such a good job. Rush answerd most of your questions so I'll just concur. As to where to buy. I know Jarred is working on finding a new home for the DVX User discount, so if you have time I'd wait and see. If not then B&H is reliable if not all that courtious on the phone.

Hope your doing well.
E.
