Best Lav for moving actors?

Jeff Anderson

Custom Title!
Sorry for the weird title but here's the deal. I'm trying to decide on a lav mic to get and just cant narrow it down. I'm doing a dog show documentary and need to mic the handler who will be wearing a suit and tie most likely. Visibility of the mic isnt too much of a concern and neither is price. I've been looking at the Tram tr50, Sanken Cos-11, and Countryman b6 - any of these better suited to this environment? My main concerns will be wind noise from the running around the ring along with clothing noise although from reading it sounds like their are enough ways to prevent that with some testing and creative taping. I just need to capture the voice of the handler working with the dog and any other ambient noise from judges and dogs is just a bonus. I'll put a shotgun or something on the camera just to have some more ambient if nothing else. Oh and the lav will be going into a g2 wireless that goes back to the camera. No sound guy if that matters (no budget shoot for my own personal fun  ). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Jeff

if he wear a tie it is no problem put the head inside the "tie" of the tie so the head is looking down , the sanken is most suitble for that job between you did mention , with the mash grill and part of the tie around it would stand quit allot of the wind , if it extra windy , just push it abit inside and place small foam in front .
the b-6 works very bad in windy situation , tram can work under the tie with vampire clip when the head looking to the clip , you will need to place abit foam all over , never liked this for that .
i vote for sanken
by the way you will not get allot of ambient as the mic is very close to the source .
if you are shooting from distance and you need better interaction sound you can place another mic inside his pocket , attached to some minidisk recorder
and get much open sound with better levels for the action
then sync that source with camera tracks

Thanks for the vote Oleg - any "wind" encountered will be from a slow jog, but I'll go with the Sanken in the tie knot just to keep it safe. Interesting thought on the mic in the pocket - kind of like a moving boundary mic? I may try and experiment with the crap mic the g2 came with and my mp3 player in a pocket and see what it picks up. I'm killing my zero dollar budget already so another mic and minidisc recorder is probably out of the question. Anyways thanks for the insight.

yes - knot -the sanken works excellent inside
if the tie make a lot of noise ( poliaster) place blue tack ( the stuff you put posters on the wall) around the mic body ( not the head and the grill )inside the knot so the head will not touch the tie , it works :-)

I have never heard of using that blue tacky stuff for isolating the lav (doesn't it get all over the tie?). I will have to try that sometime. I have had great success using makeup sponges and wig tape to quiet noisy ties.

Ditto on the cos11. Much better for wind noise and pretty easy to hide in tie knot. B6 is more versatile but also more susceptible to wind noise.

Definately picking up some blue tack...will be sending you the dry cleaning bill Oleg

Cheers

Cool, I'll be keeping that in my bag of tricks. Seems like it could have lots of other uses too. On a polyester tie I see it coming off and releasing pretty easy. Silk ties seem to have a weave (and price) I might be weary of... I'll do some tests and see what happens...

Tram under the clothes (which is what it's made for - no wind there), use the clip on mic cage that comes with the Tram, and they can then jog, and fight, and roll around and it should be noise free.

Hey, Oleg - nice tip. I'll give it a try. Leaving for Dubai now on a shoot, so no posting for me for the rest of the week. Cheers all. Tim
