I have a modest budget and currently would like to invest in one versatile shotgun mic to be used both indoors/outdoors. The mic would be used on a small inde film. I am interested in the AT 4073, AKG 391b or the Rode NTG1 or 2. If anyone has an opinion these mics or others, i would much appreciate it.

i'm no pro, but why not check out the AT897 and the Sennheiser ME66, $279 and $400 respecively, both said to be great mics.

I won't go into a whole diatribe about how there is no such thing as a perfect all in one mic (been done many times in recent posts).  I will say though for an extra hundred or two dollars over the AT you could pick up a true condensor Senn 416 used on ebay.  The quality is well worth the small extra $$$.

Do a search on ebay for Sennheiser mkh 416.  I see several now well under $600 (even one MKH60 for $700 but that will probably go for over a thousand by the time the auction is done).

The Rodes are new enough I doubt many people can comment on but maybe someone just got one.
