best format for editing videos

I need some clarification. I know that the software you use for editing doesn't affect the quality of the video, but how about the video format? If I use .avi as opposed to .mov, would there be a big difference?

if I'm to edit on a windows PC, using a beginner level software like ulead or pinnacle or movie maker, what is the best format i should store the video in?

Thx to whoever will reply :-)

To my understanding, .avi works fine as it's native to PC where mac is native to .mov. Both hold all the information needed for SD movies. HD is where the formatting becomes tricky. (I'm assuming you're shooting SD?)

That's my understanding at least.
