Best Follow Focus ...

Would love to hear what you guys think is the best follow focus set up for the HVX.

I've been looking at about all of them, but can't seem to nail down what people are using the most.

Also, when I see the banners at the top of the boards pages, like "indi focus", is that an endorsment by the DVXUSER board for that product?

Many Thanks!

I've been using a Chrosziel DV Follow Focus for several years. It still has no slop, a wonderful feel, and works in all situations I've put it in. Highly recommended, but it is a bit pricey compared to other aftermarket models.

Are the Varizoom or Foxi controllers better than the follow focus systems. I can see the difference between them, but is there an advantage to one or the other?

Thanks for the info!

Choices in follow focus products are certainly a matter of preference... but I really like my Petroff. It's very smooth and has stops.

William,
The Foxi & Varizoom are both remote control devices which allow you to pull focus electronically. These are fantastic when you need to focus and are not near the unit (like on a jib or car mount). They are useable as general FF devices as well, but do not have the fine-grain control of a manual follow focus which relies on gears. The swing from end to end of the HVX's focus range on the Foxi is about 1/2 turn of the wheel. On my manual Chrosziel Follow Focus is takes ~3 turns. So I can hit a critical mark much more accurately with the manual FF.

I own a Varizom, and it is nice, it is however very quick... for fine adjustments u r better off using the focus ring on the lens
I played with the Foxi a few times but briefly... it feels acurate as a lot of hand movement translates to less focus pull

I use the Indifocus ($299 friction wheel version) and find that it works great.

The only two very minor complaints I could mention would be that there is a tiny bit of loose play before the handle moves the grip wheel against the focus ring (but once engaged it works perfectly) and the accessability of the iris control on the camera is somewhat blocked by the Indifocus. If you've got small fingers, you can manage to get in behind it and adjust the iris without too much trouble though.

For $299 I highly recommend it :)
