Best First Light Kit for $1200?

I am wondering what the best first lighting kit to get would be? I have about $1000-$1200 USD to spend.

The first shoot I will be using them for is for a shoot in a hot tub simulating evening and with a host in the foreground, couple in background. I was thinking of making a chinese lantern for the host foreground?

Thanx

Lowel DV Creator 44 Tungsten 4 Light Kit or the Lowel DV Creator 55 Tungsten 4 Light Kit

Here's a link to B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=285931&is=REG

There is no perfect kit. I tend to piece together my kit with different units. For $1200, I'd get some Rostronics, a tweenie, a c-stand or two and flags. Add some china lanterns and you're set. ...for a while when you decide you need more stuff. It never stops.

Re: Best First Light Kit for $1200?

Thanx alot guys for the feedback, after I posted this i read back like 7 pages( my eyes are burning), and the Lowel pkg seems the way to go.
Getting this stuff in Canada, where I live is a big pain...I wish EVS would open a Canuck co...

Walter I will take you up on your free offer of help/advice, if i get the gig.

Thanx

You mean with all the production in Canada, there is no where to buy equipment?

Re: Best First Light Kit for $1200?

I purchased the DV Creator 55 kit and am very pleased with the overall quality and versatility of the kit. There are things I would like to add (like a couple of fresnels and another soft light) but that kit gives you everything you need to get going. Plus, after reading Walter's articles, I realize that there is so much to learn, just with the equipment in that one kit, that you will be busy for quite some time.

There are a couple of issues here, I live approx. 4 hours from Vancouver, so it is a big haul and with not 1 C-Stand in my town. The cost of buying equipment in Canada, is substatially higher than purchasing in the states, even with the the exchange rate.
Then if you do purchase through the states you get nailed with a hefty shipping and duty...its kind of a no win situation, and you have to bite the bullet.

Taylor you'll have to go to Seattle and shop, try Glaziers Camera @ glazerscamera.com

Re: Best First Light Kit for $1200?

EVS does ship to Canada, but you end up paying alot more for shipping and duty to get it over the border.

Re: Best First Light Kit for $1200?

I bought the DV creator Kit from Lorne Lapham in Burnaby. Talk to Ian. They quote the price in Canadian dollars based on the exchange rate. They are great to deal with.

I think if you give Rush the ol' wink-wink nudge-nudge he could offer you a way around that. At least, I've seen him mention something like that on this board not long ago. ;)
