Looking for suggestions on how to do effective networking with dependable people who are serious about making movies in Hollywood. So for all of you active filmmakers in Los Angeles, please feel free to chime in. And if you're not in L.A., please feel free to offer any generalized strategic suggestions. I'm sure others will benefit.
First a bit about me - moved down to L.A. two years ago to pursue my filmmaking ambitions. Left a pretty sweet (but unfullfilling) position in the software industry. Been writing scripts, learning editing and sound mixing, and operating B-camera on other people's small shoots.
I've got some decent gear: HVX200, Letus EX, top of the line MacPro with terabytes of storage, Final Cut Studio 2, Pro Tools LE with mixing board....
But I've been having problems meeting the right people with interesting projects to work on, or people like me who are aiming to make movies. I know a few, but not enough. And unfortunately, some have dropped like flies, and left the industry over the past two years! It's certainly easy to lose one's shirt making pet projects or ill-conceived indie films. Gotta be careful out there...
Anyway, back to my main question - can anyone recommend any good associations, filmmaking clubs, or other networking venues to meet solid indie shooters/editors/sound guys/VFX techs, etc? Over the short term (6-12 months), I would like to work on some interesting shoots, expand my network and gain experience. Over the longer term (1 year+) want to build up a solid crew to shoot a low-budget movie. Would hate to rely on Craigslist to crew up. Much better to work with people over time.
