Best Film Composer?

I know this is difficult, as they are all so bloody gifted...

But, given the opportunity of having one of these masters colaborate with you exclusively on all your future films...who would you choose?

John Williams
James Horner
Hans Zimmer
Jerry Goldsmith
Danny Elfman
Thomas Newman
Ennio Morricone
Elmer Bernstein
John Barry

or
James Newton Howard

Of the living, I have a fondness for Phillip Glass, though your list is pretty impressive. I would have loved to have worked with Bernard Herrman.

BTW, some of my favorite soundtracks have been composed and performed by Tangerine Dream. I love the "Risky Business", "Sorcerer" and "Star Man" sound tracks. Kind of dated, but were cool in the day. The "Sorcerer" sound track album was the second soundtrack album I ever bought, after "2001".

You and me both! Vertigo...North By Northwest...Cape Fear...forget about it! He was a genius.
I only meant to included living legends, however.

I still listen to the "Legend" soundtrack...talk about dated. Depending on what I am writing, I change up my soundtrack selection for inspiration.
Tangerine Dream, good call, my man!

I think Harry-Gregson Williams is really good...he has like cool techno beats in some of his stuff.

...Harry-Gregson Williams...
I am not very familiar with his work. I know he did Kingdom of Heaven...which was beautiful.
Edit
Just looked him up...WOW!
Talk about unsung hero, what a broad range.

Gabriel Yared.
Pietro Mascagni. (Music from Raging Bull. Not original to the film, but still a great piece.)

Nice.
With regards to Mascagni and Mancini, I was trying to keep the list simple by limiting it to living composers (rest assured they would be included otherwise.)

As far as Yared, he has definitely accomplished much...but I truly believe his best work is yet to come.

This is hard; damn it.

What about Herrmann? Morricone? Mancini?

I love the work of James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer but in the end I'm running with John Williams. ****; they all kick ass. This month it;s Willaims, next month it's Zimmer

I'm with John on this one. Can't really choose between the two...

About Harry Gregson-Williams. Are you kidding me?? There was no SCORE in KoH and it was probably the biggest downside of the otherwise beautiful movie. I have no idea why Scott replaced Zimmer with this Metal Gear Solid guy (who is btw from Zimmer's Media Ventures), but he could just as well not use a composer at all - not a single memorable tune, not a single powerful stand-out moment, nothing... Oh wait, there was one moment, in the "Rise a knight" scene, but... it was Goldsmith's music from 13th Warrior, for pete's sake! Unsung hero? More like hack...

I had no idea.

On that note; I totally dug KOH. Not as cool and epic as say Gladiator or Braveheart but tons better than TROY or the crap that was ALEXANDER

Hey, it was great, but I sooo wanted to have some amazing music to go with all the gorgeous battle cinematography. Zimmer should have done it... Score really makes epic films IMHO.

It was the same problem with Troy btw. Might had to do with the fact that Horner only had like 2 weeks to do the score, but the result is... bleh

Should be mentioned that a lot of the score in Kingdom of heaven is from other composers from other movies.
