any recs for external storage drive for video editing?

we currently have a lacie 500gb but it's been somewhat annoying, so don't think I should just get another of those...

I've been using three Seagates with (USB2) with no problems whatsoever. FWIW, I'm a Vegas editor, so my usage may not be as intesive as some of the others on FCP, AVID or whatever.

I recommend a G-Drive. Great hard drives (I forget which brand they put in) but remarkable customer support and hardly ever give me problems. Been using a 250gb one for a while with no troubles.

what about western digital or matrox?

what about western digital or matrox?

anyone have experience with western digital or maxtor? opinions?

Hey Nate! With so many people using RAIDS i was beginning to think I was some kind of harddrive-wussy-freak or something. I'm sure there's some performance trade-off, but nothing so great that it makes me want to go out and spend all the extra money.

I have a Wester Digital 250 gig and just recently got a Seagate 750 gig.

The WD was proven to be fast and reliable. It only has an 8mb cache but I haven't had any problems with it save for that it needed to be reformated when I got it (even though it was supposed to come pre-formated).

The Seagate is wonderful. It looks cool, comes formatted, and hasn't given me an ounce of trouble. It also has an 8mb cache which makes my life a bit easier.

Western Digital GOOD! I have 4 Western Digitals and never a problem.
DON'T GO WITH MAXTOR! I had 2 Maxtor drives Crap out on me in 12 months!
I was in the middle of editing a 4 day program and the Maxtor that I had 12 hours of video on started goingn ...."Tick.Click....Click.....Click...Tick...Ping...I pulled the video off right away to another drive and as soon as I did the drive DIED!

Go Western Digital.

Mr. Hollywood, how much did Disksavers charge you to recover the data off the drive? I may have to do the same thing with a 320gb.

I use Vegas for HDV and DVCProHD with Seagate USB 2 7200RPM external drives. We send digital masters to our clients on HDD, so dozens of the 160 - 400GB Seagates have come through here so far.

So far, no issues here or reported by our clients.

The best without a doubt is MyBook Pro. 500GB Storage, Firewire800, 400, USB. They are great quality and at under 300 you can't beat it.

For laptop users if you want something fast, and doesnt need an AC Adapter ide get a OWC Mercury On-The-Go 100GB. Also allows 800, 400, and USB.

For you backup people I do not suggest using USB at all because its just not fast enough to edit from, sure it can backup but if your trying to edit files from it, which is what I would want to do since I don't trust alot of important files on an internal drive. I suggest the MyBook for you dude, great quality and price.

To those of you with the Lacie 500 gb External Drive issues.... I fell victim to one of these as well. After reading around a while I found that in most cases the problem is with the chipset in the casing itself and not the drives. If you dont care about your warranty I would suggest doing what I did, take it apart (it actually will contain 2 x 250 gb Maxtor drives) and purchase a couple of external casings for like $25-30 each and they are still functional. Now you will lose whatever you had on them originally, but in my case I was just happy to not have to junk the whole setup and buy new drives. I got a good deal on enclosures at Tiger Direct and have been happy with them so far. And I'll never buy another of those Lacie Big Disks again....

Anyone know what kind of drive is in the G-Drives?

The G-RAIDs have two ATA 7200rpm drives striped together in a RAID 0 array and come in fw400/800 cases. They are faster than other fw external drives because of the internal RAID.

try those with hot swap
