Best external hard drive to edit from?

I'm editing on final cut and I have 1.2TB of media I'm cutting stored on a 2TB fantom FW800 external drive. I have to constantly wait for the drive to wake up anytime I playback in the time line. Lately, I can't even move or adjust clips, waiting almost a minute for the drive to wake up and catch up.

What are some better "live" storage solutions? I'm using a macbook pro 2.4 Intel dual core duo with 4g ram. thanks in advance.

I use a pair of CalDigit S2VR HD drives as my primary media drives. I also use G-Tech drives. The CalDigit are ESata while the G-Techs are ESata (G-Speed) and FW800 & 400 (G-Raids).

Great performance from all. But I do prefer the Caldigit.

I like G Tech

G-Tech G Speed eS RAID array. You can get the eSATA version for under $1k and the mSAS version for about $1400 for 3TB. Fast and very responsive.

Are you saying that the drive spins down and you can hear it spinning up every time? If you are just waiting for it to respond, then something is dramatically wrong. For many years now I have been using generic (whatever is cheap at the local shop) hard drives and those $15 IDE to USB "adapter cables" for both video and multi-track audio NLE. I can even "scrub" the video timeline and my cheap drive-du-jour keeps up just fine.
