Best external drive?

I have a Maxtor 1tb and am running that through firewire 800
but the drive is a complete mess and constantly keeps crashing on me to the point that i want to throw it out the window
it just goes to sleep and doesnt wake up or doesnt even work in the first place
has this happened to anyone else and then if so how do i go about fixing it?
or
what drive do you recommend that is firewire 800 and 1tb that i should look into as a replacement?

Im going to do some more research on it but its most likely the one I will eventually pick up
 
all of the hard drive makers are pretty much the same - they all have about the same rates of failure, western digital, seagate, maxtor, all of them. it just depends on the enclosure and what you want from it.
 
Quick tip for in the meantime of trying to find another drive:

System Prefs>Energy Saver> uncheck the box that says "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible." See pic below

I'll take a G-Tech over a LaCie any day of the week.
 
if you do get a lacie, the 500gb and up (excluding the 1tb i think) are made from building 2 or more small ones together and they are made by a third party so they are less reliable. (so a 500 would be made from 2 250s and made by mitsubishi.) a 250gb, and if i am right the 1tb are the safest ones to get.
 
i think i will have to deal with my maxtor for the time being... as funds are very low
