I shot on minidv, and the title says it all, what do you consider the best exporting setting (in final cut express) for burning to dvd...I apologize for not having searched, as Im sure this has been adressed, but I dont have much time...:dankk2:

do u have DVD studio pro? if not you should have idvd just export the full res movie and drop it into idvd and it will take care of the conversion (at least the older verrsions did havent used it since ive had DVDSP)

If you have DVDSP and Compressor then you should be fine using the preset mpeg2 settings in compressor

yes, but to my knowledge there is no "full res movie" exporting setting...so which settings should I use to retain the highest quality? I tried exporting with the DV/DVCPRO NTSC setting, with everything at highest, and it looked crappier than h.264, so Im perplexed...

"looks crappier than h.264" where exactly? If your judging it by your computer monitor than don't worry, it ought to. Your computer monitor is meant for content creation not quality control. Make sure you verify any image degradation concerns by viewing on a proper monitor.

If you shot miniDV and you don't have too many heavy effects (compositing, 3D) or titling/CC in your piece then you're not going to gain anything by using any other codec. The DV/DVCPro codec is the same quality as what you shot.

I think your main catch here is that you're having iDVD do the encoding for you. I haven't used it in about 3 years (?) now, but last I recall it never did a wonderful on encodes. I would encode it to an MPEG-2 using Compressor (find someone that has it if you don't), BitVice, or Flip4Mac Episode (the latter two you'll have to pay for, but well worth if you're going to be doing lots of encoding and not buying the full Final Cut Suite). Good luck.

cheers.
