Best export format for P2 media

Hey all-

I'm a long-standing video editor, and have worked extensively with DV footage, as well as RED footage in both Ppro and FCP. I am currently involved in my first P2-based project.

I am having trouble making P2 video, frankly, look good coming out of adobe premiere cs3. It gets washed out and recompressed.

I am trying to export into a format that will be apple-friendly. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ryan

Are you saying you want to export from Premiere and then import that into FCP? With the purpose of continuing or edit? I don't think I totally follow the workflow you want.

If it's for viewing then except for wmv Premiere really can't do a decent encoding job. I would use the Microsoft Avi setting with the compressor set to "none" then use something like Quicktime Pro to encode to h.264.

Thanks, that's what I was wondering, and explains a lot. That's disappointing. Perhaps I'll just go out to P2 format, then ingest FCP that way.

Yeah, you should stay in the same format that the footage was shot/edited in. Exporting out as P2/MXF would be the best and most efficient way.

Another possibility is exporting DVCPRO HD quicktimes using DVFilm Encoder Pro. Then you could go directly into FCP with the files without using Log and transfer.

Best,
Andy
