Best DVD-ripping software for Premiere Pro import?

Hi!

Some times I get DVDs from clients who wish to edit/transfer their videos to other formats. I guess the topic says it all; I'm kinda tired of all "HaXX0rs super-best DVD 1337 ripping softwarez".

In short: what reasonably priced piece of (serious) software do you recommend for importing DVD videos into PP?

PS: I know you can import .VOB files directly into PP by renaming them to .MPG but I can't get sound that way. Any tips is appreciated.

Thanks in advance! :)

This is illegal under the DMCA if you take video off copy protected DVD's. If it is not copy written you can use Handbreak. Just try to make sure you are getting the best video quality out of the DVD's.

Handbrake is for converting to MP4, if I remember correctly, so that's not the best option for editing.

I've been using RiverPast Video Cleaner Lite to rip DVDs and encode them to DV AVIs in one step. So far, I've had great luck with the conversions, and the footage looks great. I've been using it with client-owned materials, of course--don't know how or even if it would work with copy-protected materials.

In any event, at $20, it'll hardly break the bank, and it works a treat. I tried to do this with freeware programs and couldn't find anything that worked as well as Video Cleaner. Sometimes, you've just got to pony up... :)

Handbreak will export to MP4, MKV, AVI, and OGM. One very nice thing about it is that it can enable subtitles if you need them for some reason and it also has presets for high and low quality video so if you just need to do quick edits then extract low quality from the DVD and later on substitute it with high quality so that your machine will not be as loaded down.

It sounds like you're on a PC. If you need to do this on a Mac, I use MacTheRipper for ripping the MPEG-2 from the DVD, and then run it through MPEG Streamclip for the conversion to Quicktime (or any other format). FFMpegX can also work for some of this process.

I've tried a number of other workflows, but this one seems the least painful for my purposes.

EDIT: Ah, I read the first post and see that you can't get sound by the method I suggested. It has always worked just fine for me, odd.
