Best DV codec quality

Hi:

I don´t know much about compression so i got a question. I whant to store all my video work in the best quality posible (for future copies). Almost all is shot on the DVX, edited in Avid and outputed for DVD or similar. I was told the best way to do it is keeping it on DV, and that the best thing is QT DV. Is this correct? Is there any other way to store my work with the best quality possible?

Thanks in advance.

well, the BEST thing is uncompressed video. Thats assuming you have the hundreds of gigs that would take. I would export your video from Avid using the same codec Avid uses to capture, and burn that file to a DVDROM. Thats my best guess.

the best thing to do is batch capture and keep your tapes! then all you need to backup is the project file..

what is the difference between DV AVI and uncompressed video in avi format?

Uncompressed AVI is basically a series of bitmapped images with a header telling the width, height, and suchlike. Like you layed out a series of frame captures and strung 'em all together.

Would the best method for archiving footage using Premiere Pro be to just save the .AVI that is created on capture? Or is there a better way/format?

keep your tapes as masters. if you need you can always capture again, but for the stuf you actually work on either store them as DV or uncompressed on DVDs or archive them to an external drive. a lot of people just export the project video out to tapes. you have several options and there truly is no best way. you need to find what works best for you. i personally archive to DVDs...and when the HD or blu-ray finally comes out i'll be able to store more.

DV is compressed at a 5:1 ratio. uncompressed - the name gives it away.

Well let's clear the uncompressed marketing term...there is no such thing as uncompressed unless and this is the only method to have uncompressed video, you export an animation sequence with no video.
Even the uncompressed capture that NLEs' promise is still compressed at about 0.81 ratio. But since the remove some luminance information that is not visible in the eye the say it's uncompressed.

J. Skaf what you need to do is batch capture the video with a list and save the project as backup. When you need to reworkit you just capture again from the tapes.
