Best DOF lens

That's a vast question, Ken Rockwells' site is very informative. www.kenrockwell.com
The lower the f-stop 2.8 2.5. f2 1.8 1.4 1.2 ( the lowest light ability) lens is the main factor.

Manual aperture and focus, no haze, no internal fungus and i avoid pre AI my self. AI and AIS work great. E series are okay but much cheaper built, but they are really inexpensive.

I bought a set of 8 primes, AI ans AIS , i think i will only use maybe 4 or 5 of them.
24mm f2, 35mm f2, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4. 105mm.2.8

What kind of camera and adapter will you be using?
Hope this helps , Cheers

This is a subjective question because both the apperature and lens length can play a role in DOP. The faster lens have more apperature blades which in some cases can yeld to better bokeh, but AGAIN this is all subjective to a person. A 50mm and A 85mm can both be called "telephoto" depending on the shot and its realation to a person/talent.

Apperature, the faster the apperature, the more you can open up and have much better bokeh then stopping down (My opinion again this can be subjective). The more the lens is opened up the more it will blur out the background but your focus range will be limited. In most cases even with my 1.2 and 1.4 I stop them down to 2.0-2.8, so I am not blowing out.

A telephoto, will make the space much flatter which some think yelds better DOF, my 85mm and 200mm are both telephotos. However the 200mm really flattens and pulls the viewer away from the talent, it almost looks like they are on paper.

It all really depends on what your story is and what your trying to say, and how you want the camera to make the audience feel.

The evil corporation, EBAY!!

I checked out some of the recommended sites, but "honestly" they were all high in price. I got all 8 of mine over 3 months from ebay!
Cheers

How much should I pay for a 24 or 28mm an how much should I spend on a 85 or 105mm. I have the 50mm already.[/QUOTE]

Prices range from $57.00 - $350.00 you just have to keep looking and be patient.
Avoid haze, internal fungus and internal dust and chips and specks on glass. I found KEH a little steep when you are "buying good quality "lenses.
Good Luck

Any lenses at Keh listed as "BGN" grade is perfectly usable and I find the price to be comparable or cheaper than ebay, with the added assurance that you're getting exactly what you paid for. I personally hate the bidding process and would just rather be able to buy a lens straightaway, which is why I tend to stay away from ebay.

Oh Huy Vu. it's like Vegas, it's a gamble. BGN stands for bargain right. Good to know that they are still usable. Maybe they over describe their details i guess, do they have a return policy at all ?
Thanks

They have a good return policy, basically if your unhappy send it back no questions asked. I got my lens there saved a fortune!

Yup, keh tends to evaluate their lenses on the conservative side and their BGN grade lens is about as good as the "mint" condition lenses you'll find on ebay. I buy BGN grade pretty much exclusively and haven't got a lemon yet. If you're not satisfied, they take the lens back no question asked. Stay away from their UG grading though.

I second that!! It took two months but I ended up with a great set of primes and I didnt pay more than 120 for any of them.

Are AF's as goof as MF's on 35mm adapters?

Because I'm looking for a Nikon 85mm 1.8 at a decent price, but it's pretty hard for me to find one (I live in Switzerland and I prefer not ordering from the US).

I was wonderig if an AF 85mm 1.8 would be alright too?

AF lenses are not as preferable because they have a shorter focus throw (the degree that the focus ring is able to spin over the focus distance) than fully manual lenses, making it harder to get precise focus. Since they tend to cost more as well you end up getting less bang for the buck.
