Best direction to take.

What should I really be working toward? Once I get all the equipment, I will be making shorts and eventually, a feature. The question I have though is should I be putting most of my energy in writing shorts/features or learning more about directing and camera work? I know there is a clear distinction between if I wanted to sell my script and if I just want to make a short/feature with a production script that I wrote. In the beginning I'm sure I'll have to do everything and see where that lands me, but opinions on what others are doing would be helpful. Do most people start out doing everything and then see where their strengths are?

Yeah, I've been trying to follow John's advice for a while now, but I always feel like its not worth the effort when I know the script it lacking. So I'm trying to find a nice middle ground betweent the two.

Why not wait until you are happy with both before shooting?

You can practice composition and lighting without a script. Granted, it's much more fun with a script, but it's certainly possible.

It all starts with the story!

If the story is good, people will forgive all sorts of technical things, but if the story stinks, no one will care about your great lighting.

You have to ask yourself what you want to do before you can figure out how to get there. If you just want to direct, focus on that, if you want to write, focus on that, if you want to do it all and be an indie filmmaker you really need to know a fair amount about all elements of the process. Even if you won't be doing it all on a given shoot, you nedd to be able to know how to communicate with people in the terms they use, and also know when somebody is bullshitting you.
