'best deal' in external drive for editing

How are you backing up your media? Hate to see you lose it if that big drive fails.

Good point!
But as long as I format as a mirrored raid I should be ok

theres also this G raid option

but I wonder if either RAID 01, 1 or 10 formatted drives are enough to ensure you don't need an additional back up?

I like G-Technology. I have a mini raid I like to take with me when I edit on my laptop. Even has SATA but needs power if you using SATA. At home I have a RAID5 with five drives in it. I keep all my media cards and photos backed up so I can sleep at night. It's a cheap one since speed isn't an issue and I don't edit off it. I then use several RAID drives similar to the Lacie you're looking at. I recommend having some kind of backup strategy early on. A minimum of two. Now if it's no big deal to lose everything then don't worry about it. But if it does matter then you need to plan for backups. Before digital media was used with video I had tapes. Easy. Stick it on a shelf and batch capture if I lost the transcodes. With my 5D DSLR I got sloppy and had all the cards stored on an external drive. One day the drive just burped and I lost everything. All my pictures gone. I freaked out. I bought disk rescue software and recovered 98% of the image files but it took weeks to go through and sort all the images. Never again. Video is harder to recover and when the drive burps I wouldn't count on getting it back. Thats my $0.02.

Erik,

I hope your backing up to others drives or RAIDs too. I've seen RAID 5 arrays die & become unrecoverable.

Best,
B
