best cpu for pro 2.0

looking to upgrade my system from an old pentium 4 2.0ghz to something with a little more kick. The intel cpu market is quit diffrent than it was 3 years ago. Diffent architectures are so varies with prices compared to other architectures even without the same clock speeds, fsb speeds and cache. What intel cpu's has anyone heard works best with premiere. Can premiere take advantage of 64bit cpu's. I am looking to spend around 400 but there are cpu's in that price range in the pentium 4 socket ts, the pentium ds, the dua cores and the xeons so i am really lost which is the best for video rendering or premiere specifically.

I'd wait until Windows Vista comes out -- just because Windows XP won't fully take advantage of the 64bit processor or large amounts of RAM for that matter. I'm partial to AMD, just because I do a little gaming from time to time.

oh well i'm building it myslef so i can surley upgrade the operating system when that time comes. but i still would like to know what series of chips would hold up best.

I have never had any problems with Intel when i use Premiere from 4,2 to PRO 1,51

Well I will let you know in a few days. I just finished building my new Computer with a Intel Dual Core 3.0 in it. I use to use a 3.0P4HT which ran Premiere 1.5 pretty good actually. I am interested to see how this new machine handles it.

Update you soon,
John G.

I actually decided to go with the pentium d 2.8ghz (the 920 version whihc has 2x2mb L2 cache) I heard its very flexible for overclocking and the price is where it starts leveling off. I am also getting 2 gigs of 667 DDR2, 2 250gig sata's (16mb buffer) and i am still thinking about graphics cards now that after effects and premeier 2.0 is utilizing teh gpu on the grpahics card more and more these days. maybe we can get some test footage and do some comparisions on rendering times. I didnt want to wait til teh conroe comes out its the core dua for desktops, but supposedly when it does come out in third quarter (july) prices are gonna start dropping on the pentium ds. The core dua's for laptops arent 64bit so i dont know if the conroe will be or not. Does premiere utilize 64 bit proccessors?

Sounds like you got what I have too...I got the 920 version of the 3.0 and 2 gigs of 667DDR2 and 2 250 Sata Drives. Sounds like our rendering times would prolly be the same with a second here or there. I'm not shure if premiere utlizes 64bit proccessing or not. My guess would be no, but thats just a guess.
