Best compromise between hard/soft case?

Greetings all,

I'm a relatively new owner of an AG-DVX100A, and am agonizing over the case question. I've only the budget for one case right now (under $120), and I'll need to use it as both a flight carry-on and a portable shoulder bag that I can carry around with me in the elements. (I'm shooting a doc in Louisiana this spring.)

There are many glowing reviews of the Pelican hard cases, but I need something more feasible for day-to-day impromptu shooting. The Kata Shell 03 looks like a decent happy medium; do you have any experience with this case? Would you recommend any others that could double as a reasonably light shoulder bag and sturdy carry-on? Hopefully this is not too much of a contradiction...

Thanks for your help.

I bought the Kata shell 03 for my 100B and it's fine for "light duty." There's room enough inside for a few things (not too much tho). and it is nice and light.

Got it from B&H for $79.95.

I bought it because I wanted to use it within something larger that doesn't scream "CAMERA EQUIPMENT" when I travel.

I use 2 Tamrac (still photo) bags, the big ones are perfect for the dvx and many accessories, and they kept my stuff 100% dry in 3 days of outdoor shooting in a blizzard in Minneapolis is January (cheaper used ones on ebay) good luck!

I used a Tamrac--can't remember the size--maybe a 12? It worked pretty well, but to tell you the truth, the form factor isn't THAT much different than a Pelican when it is sitting upright. When you have the Tamrac opened, the "lid" takes up similar space.

Don't get me wrong, the Pelicans ARE bigger. But I don't experience them to be vastly more interruptive to run and gun than the Tamrac.

Good bag, though. I'd recommend it.
