Best Compressor settings for 720p to DVD?

After checking through this forum, no real definative answers. I'm compressing a 83 minute film shot on HVX (720pN) onto sd DVD.

I've used the 90 minutes best quality option and gotten good results but if anyone knows any tricks to boost up quality...I'de appreciate it.

Maybe i'm overlooking something? Wouldn't be the first time!

Solomojo,

I've found the best results when I exported my DVCPRO HD 720p film to cineform 1280x720. For some reason the DVCPRO dvd encodes are very blocky (especially the reds); the cineform encodes look great.

I used Compressor custom settings (2 pass VBR; my bit-rate was 5.5 average and 6.5 maximum). I also found that exporting directly from FCP eliminated an audio/video sync issue I was having (when I exported as a quicktime movie -non self contained-, the video and audio would end up drifting off sync by 5 - 7 frames).

Hope this helps.

Most encoding software that comes with your NLE will not scale, or pre-process your footage for Maximum quality Mpeg-2. Unfortunately all you can do is use more expensive software or hire out a compression expert to get the most that you can out of it.

You can check out my thread where I sell my services, there are some good pictures demonstrating what kind of quality improvements you can expect from a professional compressionist: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=162236
