best Compression for archiving

Hey all, I have lots of raw avi files imported for a job that I recently finished. Now I don't want to get rid of the footage that I have.( It's still on the tape of course) I would like to know what would be the best Codec or form of compression for Archiving purposes in you opinion? and also what do everyone use

I probably "wasted" a lot of DVDs but I didn't compress. I just put my clips (files) out directly to DVD using Toast. I guess I used about 30 DVDs or so, but if I need a clip I just go to the DVD that contains it and pull it straight off. The DVDs were about $0.43 each so $20 isn't too bad a cost to archive the project. Now, the time involved, it was significant.

I thank everyone for the comments but I think you may have missed the intent of this post. I understand that I can back everything up to DVDs I have lots of DVDs but as you said that is very time intensive. I also have lots of HD's over 2 TB's to be exact, but I'm looking for a good codec or form of compression that will reduce file size but be as close to uncompressed as possible.

I will assume there isn't one. Otherwise it would probably be the default, rather DV.

As far as others go...probably any of them, since you can adjust the amount of compression used to tatse.
