Best Boom mic, for all purpose under 700$ to plug whit ZoomH4N

In my experience, if there are any mics that would work with the Zoom's weak preamps it's the 4053 and 4073. I know they could record dialogue well with the level controls on the AF100 at only 2 or 3 - and with no distortion.
 
Hi: I have that same mic, but after comparing it with a $400 AKG cardiod mic (not shotgun), I've discovered a slight high-end hiss gets printed with the AT897 - but the AKG is clean as a whistle on the same Tascam DR-40. Do you also notice the same hiss?
 
Hi:

I'm ready to upgrade from my AT897 (too noisy!), and I'm hoping the noise floor is much better/cleaner with something like the Rode NTG-1, 2 or 3?

Also: Do you think there is a substantial difference in quality between these different Rode models?
