ok i'm just about ready to order my on camera lighting...

100 watt dimmable mini-frezzi with the lightbox & gels
dichoic filter and barndoors, xlr connector

i need advice on choosing a battery & charging system.

choices... NiCD or Lead Acid

... Shoulder or belt pack

NiCd is a lot lighter from what i have read. It seemed like the lead acid ones were like 17 pounds!

I went with 100 watts because i've never had an on camera light and i was worried about getting too small a light and i figured i can use the dimmer to turn it down.

the shoulder mount seems like a hassle so i was thinking a NiCd belt pack??

what brand? anything i missed??

Shoulder-mount are a pain (literally), so go for a belt. An 8-lb lead-acid battery would drive that light for about two hours. So you'll have to figure out your runtime needs, and what you can afford -- NiCad's are more expensive, etc.

Re: Best battery for 100 watt mini frezzi???

can someone please give me a basic formula, like for each 25 watts of light you need x amount of amps? or watt hours?

i think i want to go with nicad's

if you have a 100 watt frezzi and you dim it to say 25 watts, does it pretty much use 25 watts or is there an extra 5 watts that is consumed in the dimming process?

are xlr connectors the way to go? the xlr connectors + cigarette connector on the battery seemed flexible.

also, is there a good adaptor to run this light on AC current if its available??

XLR is the way to go, and if you can get a dual-power belt that has cigarette and XLR, that's better than just having XLR.

As for runtime, it takes about 8.5 amp-hours to run 100 watts for 1 hour. Multiply the amps x the volts (12 volt) to get the # of watts you can drive for 1 hour. So 8.5 amp-hours x 12 volts = 100 watts per hour.

Actually, forget Nicad, go for NiMH if you want light weight, but it's expensive. Figure on about $90 for a one-hour lead-acid battery with dual power plugs and charger (about six pounds), and for NiMH it'd be more like $260 and four pounds.

Re: Best battery for 100 watt mini frezzi???

hey, i was a day or two away from ordering the frezzi 100 watt dimmable kit and last night in the middle of the night i went on ebay to check on an auction and for the hell of it i check for frezzi's and someone put up a 100watt dimmable, just the light, no accessories for $150 buy it now!

so i scored that puppy asap. it is a cigarette lighter version but most all the batteries i have looked at have both xlr and cig. plugs.

so now i just need the battery...
