Best bang for your buck Monitor

I am directing a short starting in July, and we're using my HPX170. I want to leave the Camera Op alone mostly, so I'm looking for a small (preferably HD) monitor. I have got a rental quote on a 8" Panasonic, 100/day. That's not bad, but i was wondering if i should just buy a cheaper monitor. I am willing to give up the all the capabilities of the fancy Monitors, I have a waveform and vector scope in my HPX170.

So that being said, whats a good small cheap monitor?

I picked up a SmallHD monitor for $749 to use with my HPX170 -- best resolution (1280x768 = HD) for the money right now (actually for any amount of money in a small form factor)... 2.5x more pixels on the screen than the 800x480 Panny but doesn't have some of the other features like focus-in-red, waveform, etc.

With the high resolution, I find I don't really need the other focusing aids and the 170 has built-in waveform/vectorscope anyway...

Cheers,

The smallhd isn't for sale to the general public yet. I corresponded with the owner today. He hopes to be open in the next couple of weeks; July 1.

I give people credit for buyiing the first ones sight-unseen based only on the specs.

Ahh...Didn't realize they weren't available in quantity yet. Hopefully you can get one in time; the monitors are really worth the money IMO...

Yeah, it was somewhat of a risk but I had been following the company progress for quite some time and I came to trust Dale's commitment to delivering a quality product with higher specs than anything available to date. So far, he and SmallHD have been absolutely great to work with...

sadly, i was looking at those when they went on pre-sale, and thought "i should order one" now i really want one. they seem perftect for the 170, no need for focus assist or waveform

the smallHD is an incredible monitor, not to be doubted one bit. if you can wait a couple of weeks, you're in for a treat. tons of photos of my SmallHD DP1 on my flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/meeksdigital

There are also some great reviews on the SmallHD DP1 over at DVinfo.net/conf in the SD/HD Monitors section.

yeah, SmallHD and Manhattan LCD seem to the best for the money. I have a Manhattan and it works great. Both are much sharper than montiors that cost much more.

I own a Manhattan LCD HDO89A 8.9" and although have only had the opportunity to use it on one shoot (other than playing around) I am very pleased with it. For about $620 you can get the monitor and a battery mount from Dolgin to use your Panny or Sony, etc batatery with it. I have the Sony "L" battery adapter and with the big generic battery on it ran for more than an hour with no issue and I have a feeling it woudl be good for several more hours.

The SmallHD is also a great monitor from all accounts with even higher resolution than the Manhattan but with battery is a couple of hundred dollars more.

Both would be great for focus and framing.

I have no experience with it, but from the feature set I'm really diggin' on the Marshall lcd70p. 800x480, function buttons that can be programmed for push of the button 1:1, red focus, false color, all the stuff needed for calibration, 1.3 pounds, and costs just around $1000usd.
