Best Audio for Fitness Videos

I'm just starting out and one of my first projects is a series of fitness videos. The setting will be a fitness studio with wood floors and glass / mirror walls. There will be music and of course the voice of the instructor.

The end format will be DVD and web (podcast).

Would I want a wireless lapel mic for the instructor? Is there a specific recommendation that folks have used in similar scenarios?

I'm on a tight budget and would also like to be able to re-use the equipment in a broad range of applications. My other projects are mainly documentaries with lots of indoor interviews so there is probably lots of overlap.

thanks much!

Typically, fitness instructors use headset mics, there are even special "sweat resistant" mics out there designed specifically for this sort of application. I think you'd have better luck with a headset than a lav on this one, you might look at renting one rather than buying because you probably wouldn't find a lot of use for it down the road.

(sorry, couldn't resist).

Yes, the Countryman E6 is the headworn version of their B6. It is waterproof and is a very good lav (they do demos dipping the b6 into a coke and then recording with it.)

Be sure to get some non-lubricated condoms (seriously) for the mic pack, otherwise it's going to be a bit damp. Yuck.

Hi Phil,

Yes, the Countryman E6 came to my mind, too. But putting a transmitter inside a latex container sounds questionable - even inside a cloth pocket the transmitter will get warm. Seems like Gortex or similar material that can breathe would be more appropriate except for short work. But if you're using disposable batteries, than no problemo - I don't think the heat will hurt a good quality transmitter (Sennheiser or better).

Michael,

It's done in theaters across the country every day/night. It's actually quite amusing to see a large case of condoms sitting next to the sound board when you're in a theater. :)

My experience with the E6 is limited (really have to talk the boss into buying a couple of those, though :) ), but it would seem to me that it might not stay on so well during an aerobics routine. Typically, the "aerobics" mics are ones that wrap around the back of the head. But, like I said, haven't really used the E6 enough to know...
