I am looking at using an external hard drive (about 500GB) to store my completed projects. Here is were my "newbieness" comes in. What is the best proactice for long term strage of a project, assuming you anticipate your drive requires emptying over time to accept new projects? I mean, is it best to keep a master DVD of a film and just run a copy of from it or do people regularly keep finsihed prjects stored on hard drives? thanks!

I keep mine on my hard drive while it's in post, then master it to dvd. I also keep all the raw footage on tape and export a copy of the final to dv tape. I'm about to look into an EDL system for my workflow so theoretically I can reasemble the project from raw parts though that concept is new to me. I have 500gb of hard drive space but for some reason am a real miser when it comes to letting it fill up, probably an after effect of not having enough space in the past.

Premiere 6.0......Why are you laughing? I cant afford to upgrade to win XP right now and my older matrox rt2500 has no XP support. Since I mostly deal with cuts and disolves, 6.0 works fine......The big question is why I'm defending myself like this:laugh:......Anyway, yeah...Premiere 6.0.

I use an external hard drive to back up the final completed project (Avid). This way, in the future I can easily open up the final cut on the timeline and have all of my audio channels still separate and even tweak a color correction effect here and there. Of course, this means that I will always need a version of the NLE that is capable of opening this project.

If I know I'll never need to go in and make changes (shorts etc) I just export the final project to DV tape. I record it to the tape several times in a row so that if I do play it back later on and cause drop outs I have more copies to go to. If possible, I also like to burn full res QT files to DVD so that I have an uncompressed source file that I can quickly go to.

There are many options, but I like to have the purest form that I can -- right down to audio tracks that aren't downmixed.

Hey I'm not laughing, I just thought you were a Premiere guy and I assumed you were using PPRO.
Pro 1.5 has the features you mentioned in the post above that you wished you had.
EDL export:

And a feature I find more useful. Project Manager:

I use the project manager feature on all my projects.
When you finish a project you go to this screen, and save the completed project to a new folder then delete your original. It keeps the timelines and only the clips used. Not everything you batched at the beginning. So if you dumped 1 hour of footage for a 4 minute short, it only keeps the four minutes you used. It still keeps the list of everything you originally batched in case you wish to re-edit at a later date. Very handy feature that many PPro users are not aware of.
May be worth the upgrade........

Yeah, I save several copies of the completed project on tape and store the tapes in different locations. The full res QT files to DVD is a good idea, I wish I would have thought of that earlier.

Nice....I forgot to mention that it would cost me roughly $2,000.00 to go there, I just read my earlier post and it looked as though I couldn't affor XP but it's the RT card that's the cost. By the time I can afford it, Mr. Gates is due to come out with his Mad Cow or Short Horn OS so once again I'll be playing back fiddle:cry:

Yea...we have to then switch to Blu-Ray DVD burners...players...cds...the works...its gonna cost a lot of ppl a few bucks if they plan on updating when they try archiving stuff.

I think the best way to archive is jus throw all your footage onto a DVD and call it a day. Organize them all by raw clips and final movies. Have raw footage and final movies on separate DVDS. Then just re use your DV tapes...

Hey Sirius, where is that project manager feature? I knew it was there, but couldn't find it the other day when I needed it.
