to JDS spot on reply, i would add that specifically you should think about the emotions you are trying to create in the audience throughout the scene as a part of the larger story. JDS has given some great points about how to create visual effect and weight for the scene ..or ways of making the audience percieve something taking place in a certain way through how it is shown, and to specifically tune that principle in of letting the camera work come from the story being told I would suggest that you heavily consider the emotional impact along with the visual. ..this is something that JDS im sure considers salmost synonomous with the word "story" but ill elaborate on it a bit for you just in case. so in other words ..you should be asking yourself questions like ...are we supposed to feel sorry for the kid getting bullied. so do we want to see his face, and the terror and tears in his eyes as hes getting hit? do we want to hear him breathing hard and coughing and see his lips trembling and hands shaking as the bully comes in at him again. or is the focus on the bully, ..maybe he doesnt want to do it but he's keeping up appearances so his bully freinds dont beat him up. should we see how hard it is for him to be doing this? .. is the kid manning up, is he learning to stand up for himself ..should we feel proud of him even though hes getting his butt kicked? ..ect. anyway, in the end you should have a scene that not only effectively visually shows what took place, but also tells an effective emotional story through the charachters. what the audience wants to see is the marriage of both these elements. ..both what happens to the charachters, and how it makes them feel. the audience needs to be able to associate thier own feelings with any scene to which point you should be effectively visually communicating the action, as well as what is going on in the charachters heads. or the scene will not carry any weight. ..of course though, im speeking in terms of a dramatic peice. if this was for a martial arts, horror, or action flick the charachter driven story arcs need be much less involved because your audience is not expecting much, and relatively simply does not care ...unless youve made them to.
..anyway. just another .02 in the bucket.
