Best addition for FCP?

Hey fellow FCP users. I am wanting to get a program that is able to do some cool text and graphics (that are animated, if that is the right word) for some upcoming videos I am doing. What is best program to get? Also, if there is a wide price range, is there a program that is on the inexpensive side that is still decent? Thanks! ;D

Re: Best addition for FCP?

Apple Motion will be coming out soon and I have heard some amazing things you can do with text. The workflow stays away from keyframes and more towards a graphical timeline, a "self-propelled behavior animation". From what I have read it is still possible to keyframe even though that is not the strong point of the software. Anywho, Motion should be avalible in June, I can't wait! For now definately use Combustion or After Effects.

I guess your not happy with the results Livetype gives. I am sure AE is ten times better but I have gotten some cool results with Livetype. A lot of people ask me if I used After Effects and I say nope...Livetype!

Kyle Maryland --

Check out Boris products too. Really depends on what you want to do. I am VERY afraid of Motion. If it is even twice as good as LiveType lots of apple fans will very disapointed!

I use After Effects. Great titles, state of the art compositing... a time remap that actually works. Stiff -- and i mean Stiff learning curve. If you know Photoshop you are halfway there... but...

Oh -- did you know that all the compositing for Van Helsing (sp?) was done in AE?

Also a BIG limiting factor in Motion is that it will not do 3D.

Re: Best addition for FCP?

To me Live Type kinda sucks. Maybe I'm just really bad at it, but for all the times I've used it I've come to the conclusion it caters mostly for one individual title at a time, not a whole opening credits or end credits sequence.

As for a program, obviously After Effects.

Re: Best addition for FCP?

Yeah, I am not too fond of LiveType. While I do think its great for a quick, cool title, I haven't been able to get it to easily make other stuff. I have used it quite a few times, but I'll admit I probably don't know enough about it to completely discount it. But yes, I would like something that is a little more versatile than LiveType.

Re: Best addition for FCP?

Motion is sizing up to be just another addition to Apple's stable of pro-sumer offerings (ie: iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, Motion). The "entry level" into motion graphics... but in no way does it do compositing. (That's why they have Shake). They know they can't compete with After Effects, and they're sure not going to compete with their own high-end compositor for so cheap. I see it as livetype with a few bells & whistles. Time will tell however.

Re: Best addition for FCP?

Motion by no means is meant to do compositing. But I would not put it next to iPhoto and iMovie....it isn't part of iLife. But for DVD menus and for some sweet easy to do titles and graphics Motion is going to kick ass.

Re: Best addition for FCP?

Motion is put next to FCP HD, Shake, Logic, and DVDSP3, for a reason. Part of it is marketing, yes. But Motion will have some amazing stuff in it. That will make life easier. I can basically guarantee that you will be a user of motion, and I am sure 99% of people who use Apple computers to edit video on will be using motion in some way or another. It isn't just another program. It is another program that will make life easier and cooler by apple. When Final Cut Pro first came out, lovers of Premiere were saying the exact same thing. Motion will change the way a lot of us do video.

Re: Best addition for FCP?

I have used After Effects a little, and found that my lack of knowledge of it combined with my "less than artsy" mind makes it very difficult to use. I would like to get some cool compositing done, but haven't been real successful at it in AE. But on the other end of the spectrum, I feel like LiveType doesn't give me enough options to work with stuff (maybe I don't know it well enough though). So what would be the best "middle" program?

Re: Best addition for FCP?

I think Kyle's right and that's what Apple is banking on. I like -- no, love LiveType when I want to grab a quick title to throw down. I just smiled when I showed a DVD I did all in LiveType and an honest-to-god Avid editor who loves AE looked at it and said... "man, that took you a long time... I see 'this and that' and 'that and this' " all the time thinking I did it in AE... I just sat back and smiled. It wasn't cost effective for me to do it in AE.

Same thing with GarageBand - why spend the $$ for protools and learn to do everything down to the nano-note when you can do it quick and dirty for much less in way less time.

I'm starting to lean with Kyle -- uh-oh!!
