Best 1080 24p & 30p for playback from a computer?

What is the best codec to use for 1080 24p or 30p when rendering out of Vegas and only playing files from a computer? Looking for the highest quality codec. Not looking to save hard drive space, just as high of quality as possible.
Thanks!

The highest quality will be uncompressed, but not every machine is going to be able to play it back smoothly.

The highest-quality codec that most machines should be able to play back would be DVCPRO HD.

Most HD web enconding is done via AVC/H.264/MP4, or Windows Media 9, which is a variation of AVC/H.264/MP4.

Yeah, I guess I'm looking for ultra smooth 24 hour a day playback. We'll be playing it from a dvi port onto a 1080p television from a computer. That's all the computer is going to be doing. But can Vegas encode to DVCPRO HD without having to go through an interm codec? I'm looking for the best quality that I can render from Vegas. How about good ol avi?

AVI isn't a codec. It's a wrapper which can hold many different codecs.

You can use Raylight to export DVCPRO HD AVIs (using DVFilm RAYLIGHT under the format dropdown in the Custom AVI settings). Programs like Windows Media Player will have no problem playing them, especially 720p files. It's not technically DVCPRO-HD, but it's bit-for-bit identical. It'll be higher-quality than AVC/MP4/H.264/WM9.
