yo!

for a not so important reason, i uploaded 2min raw material i shot during the 1st of may riots in berlin, 2001, which i thought to share with you guys. it was shot with a palm DV camera (sony pc3) long before the DVX era :)

took off.. let me know if someone is veery interested to watch :)

the story:
3 months after arriving in Berlin i was very much into "terror" as a subject matter to an audio visual work i was planning. 1st of may in Berlin is notorious for being a massive riot spectacle, 9000 policemen from all over germany are coming to handle this violent ritual that became a tradition in the city. in the name of anti-fascism, anti-globalisation, anti-whatever, people are going out to the streets and start a little war with heavily armed police forces. it's something i've never seen before, even when i did ENG shooting in the times of the palestinian uprising in israel, since here it's the legal, ordinary citizens turning the city upside down, out of a very basic urge of violent (!? to simplify it . . . it is more complicated... anyway)
so there i was, with my PC3 in the frontline, until the demonstrators started to withdraw and i forgot myself somewhere in the bushes, framing the upside down red car. you'll see how it ended in the clip. what you can't see (only hear my scream in the "off") is the policeman hitting the back of my head with the truncheon. what you also can't see (i didn't have enough space on my server) is how my camera keeps on recording, while i was bleeding all over and sure my camera is dead.

still have a scar on the back of my head to tell the story ;)

Re: Berlin, 1st of may 2001

That was wild! I, too, am glad to hear you're OK now.

Does that still happen every year on May 1st?

Re: Berlin, 1st of may 2001

yep. same year same procedure more or less. you go out of your house and see a bus station burning. and it's really hard to hang around without finding yourself a potential target for another crazy policeman.... don't really know what i was up to then .. such a berlin hardcore fever :)

Re: Berlin, 1st of may 2001

That's disturbing. Not the demonstration and remembering part but the fact that these people would basically ruin their own city.

Re: Berlin, 1st of may 2001

Mob rules mentality.

Happens after every major sports championship in the U.S.

It's odd how people will do things that seem contradictory to their personalities (i.e. 'go caveman') in the 'anonymity' of a crowd or mob.

Re: Berlin, 1st of may 2001

San Diego sports teams are a joke. If the Padres or Chargers (yeah right) ever win the big one I hope the people dont do anything stupid. We are known for being mellow though (the fans).

Re: Berlin, 1st of may 2001

Well, that was certainly interesting.

I don't think that a riot which becomes an annual social event carries much legitimacy, so in this case (and in most riot cases) I side with the cops.

Re: Berlin, 1st of may 2001

you side with the cops speedbump? :-/

non of us is into vandalism.. though you all must understand that berlin, germany is not USA. the police forces here are notoriously violent, nothing you could imagine... i wasn't into starting a debate around it right here, but before taking side make sure you know what happened there before and after. i want to see you walking innocently in your neighborhood in 1st of may (which is basically a normal holiday like day-off where families are going out to the parks) and being threaded by a fully armed policeman, and just for doing nothing.
i hate vandalism and even more, i hate the idea that citizens ruin their own city (i hear you john)... but all i know is that i haven't done anything wrong there. . .
