Ok I just got back from seeing this at the theater, and... I'm VERY disappointed.
The dialogue is awful. Really on the nose, and just plain bad.
The editing is even worse. It's paced really weird, it just looks like it's been shot to kind of be at a slower pace, but the editor kind of wanted to put some cool speed into it. It's got all these weird speedups every now and then, plus I counted like at least four unmotivated montage sequences.
The music is also worth a mention. It's really over the top, there's no real use of silence and there's just no... mood. You know?
Then there's the fact that nearly every shot looks VERY digitally enhanced. Like in Lord of the Rings, but more unnatural. The CG transformations don't help. Neither do the jump scares.
A good period piece should be like ROAD TO PERDITION or THE GODFATHER or THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Sadly, this is actually closer to UNDERWORLD than that.
This is very much NOT a horror movie, or at least not a movie made to be scary.
I think what really bothered me the most though is how flat the story is. There's no diving into the psychological impact it would have on a person to become a werewolf, and the metaphorical use you could make out of a story like that is just wasted.
And really, finally, Wolfman climbing up onto a gargoyle with a CG background of victorian London, howling at the moon has NOTHING to do with the original mythos of this creature. It's a cartoon based on a cartoon. A true werewolf is a lot more.
I'm just saying this because I'm a BIG werewolf fan. AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON was the movie that made me love horror films back when I was like 10. The original WOLF MAN is one of my favorite black and white films. It's my favorite monster. And I had high hopes for this.
